Title
[X154A7AQ], Letter from Uriah Hunt Painter to Josiah Custer Reiff, February 7th, 1888
Editor's Notes
Yours of 2/5 to hand. Can't you have the Edison people write to [Evarts?] and call his attention to the Cigarette matter and ask him to see Edison to convert it into a geneal law. ## I will see him tomorrow myself on the same point, but there ought to be a pressure from diferent directions. ## I have not written to EHJ about the appropriation I told you in order to prevent any interference until the matter is closed up. ## I have just received a letter dated on the [6th?] from J. H. McClements, who signs himself as Controller of the Edison Co., calling upon me to make an explanation 'of the exact status of affairs,' in answer to which I have just written him that I had no explanation to give, and that if I was again interfered with, I would abandon it. ## [continues in same vein; bad carbon copy] ## Mr. TAE did not invite me to go to Orange. I asked several times for such an invitation and you have seen all the [illeg].. On the contrary he has intentionally kept me at a distance.
