- Editor's Notes
- Written in Reiff's hand (unclear if this is a copy or draft): Johnson asked me by letter to come into a meeting with Painter & yourself & bring contracts etc. all the papers in Re Phongraph deal are in Mr Tomlnson safe & I could only give from memory Insull has a copy of my contract with Lippincott but he took it before I read it & I am not sure it’s the first or second copy.##The first deal was that I was to receive $500,000 cash & no stock of 15 per cent which was agreed to be given me by the Edison Phonograph as Lippincott bought only the stock ifthe Co he had to assume the royalty payments.##I receive $167,000 of the 500,000 to pay the old stockholders, afterwards the contract was altered. He agreed in the contract which ist he one Insull has a copy of I think that if I would forego my royalty & bind myself for future inventions He Lippincott would assume the payment of the $167,--- to the old stockholders. I understand he has already [bottom half of text missing and two or three words are illegible] & is bound to pay to the extent of $167,000. of course I have nothing to do with what he pays others. My contract is form for cash the only reason I am anxious the things should be settled up is that he holds back order from the factory & if I don't get something soon the d____d factory will eat me up & as you will see from the contract he may withdraw from it the contract any moment. While I dont think he may be compelled to, as it [looks as if he had bit off more than he can chew. Look at contract & explain it to U.H.P.
