- Editor's Notes
- Enclosed you will find a copy of a deed of Trust, under which John H. cheever holds some Phonograph Stock for the benefit o the Company.##There is no longer any necessity for the Trust, and I would like to have you procure the signatures of Messrs Cheever and Bradley, and Roosevelt Executors to the enclosed Power of Atty., which will give the stock back to the Company.##I will then procure the signature of Mr. Hubbard and sign it myself.##When that stock is out of the way I will then have an assignment made of the Contract with Mr. Edison made to you by the Company, and procure the written consent of all the Stock-holders, which will carry out the last agreement that we made.##Please do not say anything of the supplementary agreement to any one at present.##The recent decision of the Supreme Court sweeps away the cobwebs that some spiders were weaving, and leaves an unobstructed field for many years.##I find there are not precedents for the extention of a patent until within a very short period prior to the elapse of the patent.##The ground on which patents have heretofore been extended has been that the period for which the patent was granted had elapsed before the inventor could succeed in perfecting the detials so as to make it a commercial success.##During the next Congress, or towards the close of it, would be an opportune tyime to move in the matter, but I am satisfied that nothing can be accomplihsed at this session.##I think I have got all the minority stock arranged for now, os tha the assignment of the Contract will be endoresed by all the sock-holders, to two of whom I have promised phonographs.##I think it would be well to send your certificates which are in the name of a number of different people, here and let me issue one certificate for them all in your name, or as the contract is to be assigned to you, it would probably be better to put the stock in my name, or in that [of] some other party if you would prefer it.
