[X154A8BD], Letter from Sigmund Bergmann to Uriah Hunt Painter, March 16th, 1889

Editor's Notes

My Dear Painter Yours of 12th rec'd--enclosing specimens from new type writer. It looks very well and is certainly the best work I have seen but as to taking hold of it I am not yet in shape to do so. I know what it means to tackle a machine of this kind which is not yet perfected & witht eh experience that I have had should hesitate to do so even if the shop was in entire running order.##Whenever they are ready with a perfected machine & all there is to do is go ahead & manufacture then I also will be ready to give it serious consideration##I did not answer your letter in re Reiff immediately as I wanted first to see Reiff. I have done this and settled with him. I have promised to pay him another $1000.00 and also, provided you and Johnson do the same, to give him 10 shares of this Company's stock##I have leased a store, at No. 79 Fifth Avenue, betw 15th & 16th Street--10 years lease; rent 6,000.00 from May 1st occupation at once-- The premises are at present a Residence, but it will be altered to suit our business, the alterations will cost $2500.00 or thereabouts. I have been expecting you any day or would have written you these details before.##The settlement of the matter of the three lots next door has again been postponed till next Thursday. I enclose you the letter of the lawyer who searched the title. Please read & return immediately with your remarks which I should like to have.##Genl Eckert has told me to go ahead with 100 Perforators and I am doing so. Hoping to hear from you soon
