This folder contains documents relating to an explosion in January 1916 aboard the Navy's E-2 submarine in the Brooklyn Navy Yard that resulted in the death of five men. The one item for 1917 is a 72-page report by consulting engineer Lamar Lyndon entitled Report on Edison Storage Batteries for Submarine Service, printed for the use of the U.S. Senate Committee on Naval Affairs and published by the Government Printing Office. The report, which was commissioned by Edison, concluded that "the Edison is the most suitable storage battery now obtainable for service on submarine vessels."
The following pages have been selected: 3-5 (printed correspondence between Edison and Lyndon, October 1916); 45-46 (summary and conclusions, January 6, 1917); 53-59 (report on the explosion, November 2, 1916).
