This folder contains documents relating to the development of new technology in the fields of aviation and aeronautics. Also included are letters from the general public requesting Edison's opinion or advice on matters pertaining to aviation. Most of the selected items for 1919 deal with Edison's financial and personal support for the pioneering efforts of Peter Cooper Hewitt and Francis B. Crocker to develop a functioning helicopter. Also included is a letter from Edison associate Miller Reese Hutchison, describing his experience as a long-distance passenger on a large airplane.
Approximately 20 percent of the documents have been selected. The unselected items consist primarily of unsolicited ideas, inventions, and business propositions submitted to Edison by the general public, none of which received more than a form-letter reply.
