Description: This letterbook covers the period September 1891-November 1892. Most of the correspondence is by Alfred O. Tate and Thomas Maguire. Many of the letters are addressed to James W. Gladstone. The letters deal mainly with the marketing of the Edison-Lalande primary battery for use with the telegraph and phonograph. Included are items pertaining to advertising methods; the distribution of batteries through the regional supply houses of the Edison General Electric Co.; technical improvements that increased the cost of batteries; Edison's supervision of the company's orders, shipments, and accounts; and agencies in foreign countries. There is also some non-company correspondence, signed by Tate as Edison's private secretary, similar to the material found in the General Letterbooks. The front cover is labeled "Battery Letter Book of the Edison Manufacturing Co., Orange N.J. 1891-1892." The spine is stamped "Letters." The book contains 698 numbered pages and an index. Pages 369-698 are blank. Approximately 20 percent of the letters have been selected.
