This 1886 letter was written by Robert W. Devonshire of the American Bell Telephone Co. to Ezra T. Gilliland, a longtime Edison associate and collaborator. Edison had recently patented an improved telephone transmitter that used granulated carbon and had signed a contract with the Bell company (Gilliland's former employer) the week before.
