These letters to Caroline Gardner Bartlett from Edison, Miller Reese Hutchison, and Walter H. Miller all date from 1912. Bartlett, a vocal soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, had developed a new method of "natural" tonal expression that she was demonstrating publicly. A letter from Hutchison to "Governor" George Washington Young, a prominent banker and third husband of the opera singer Madame Nordica (Lillian Norton), describes Bartlett's encouraging visit with Edison, but it is not clear whether the contemplated experimental recordings were ever made. Several of the letters contain references to Albert Meserlin, Hutchison's personal secretary.
