Title
[D8523I], Letter from Edison Electric Illuminating Co (Brockton), William Lloyd Garrison, Jr. to Thomas Alva Edison, February 3rd, 1885
Editor's Notes
[Letterhead of W.L. Garrison, Agent, Edison Electric Light Co.] "It pains me to inform you" that Mr. Johnson, having promised to rectify certain mistakes at the Brockton Station, now puts the responsibility upon the Village Plant Committee, which repudiates his pledge. The contract for construction was made with you personally, so I presume we must look to you for redress. Our directors meet tomorrow morning and will undoubtedly place the case in the hands of Judge Hoar and follow his counsel. In case we are forced to this unpleasant alternative, we will not pay the notes due you maturing this month, and you should arrange for them accordingly. We will defend suit until justice is done, and if we resort to the law, we shall claim damages sufficient to cover contract shortcomings and costs. "Trusting that we shall not be driven to this unpleasant antagonism and that Mr. Johnson will adhere to his promises voluntaily and repeatedly made." [Added at top of letter as P.S.]: "Since writing this, the Directors have agreed to meet Mr. Hastings here Friday morning."
